Council

Wagait Shire Council

The Wagait Shire is a local government area in the Northern Territory of Australia; first established as the Cox Peninsula Community Government Council on 2 April 1995 and renamed as Wagait Shire Council with effect from 1 July 2008.

Council Logo

A competition was held in 1995 to introduce a logo for the Council, which was won by 12-year-old resident Nadia Malone. Nadia selected the iconic and familiar banyan tree at the front of the Cox Country Club, with the caption ‘Growing Together’; symbolising the growth of the Wagait Beach community.

Elected Members

Council Members are elected by public vote and serve a four-year term. The Council President and Deputy President are elected by the Council Members at the first meeting of the council following the election. If a vacancy arises on Council during the four year term, a by-election is held and must take place within three months of the vacancy arising.

In 2020, a new Honour Board was set up in Council Chambers to celebrate 25 years of self-government and proudly shows the consistent local commitment since 1995.

At the general election for local government held on 23 August 2025, the following Councillors were elected: Sarah Manning, Dr Sarah Smith, Tom Dyer, Neil White and Peter Clee.
